A mermaid from the Middle English language mere “sea” + maid(en) is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of a human female and the tail of a fish. Did you know that there is a male version of a mermaid called merman? Did you ever see Splash? It is a 1984 movie starring Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks. Hannah played a mermaid who fell in love with a man (Tom Hanks). She could walk dry land as a human female, but whenever water touched her legs they changed into a fish-tail. Much of the movie revolves around her humorous attempts to conceal her true identity from her lover.
